Redding gets some love

A couple of years ago, the town where I grew up opened a bridge designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. Today it was mentioned on CNet.com by one of their authors making a pacific northwest roadtrip.

My dad helped participated in the execution on the management side and I find it interesting the exposure that it has received over the past 24 months. It is certainly a forward-thinking investment in a community where backwards is not uncommon. The sundial tower is actually curled in a clockwise direction so that when the suspension cables are attached to it and stress the member, it “unwinds” under load and squares up. It’s a very pretty bridge and sits adjacent to the Sacramento River trail (one of Redding’s best features in my opinion; I spent many a year of high school soccer running up and down that trail).

This, along with the entire Turtle Bay complex, is pulling in new visitors to the area and isn’t dependent on the water level at Lake Shasta adding some diversity to the tourist attractions in the area.
