I use a spam filtering package called DSPAM for server-side spam filtering. It’s a Bayesian package that is incredibly accurate. This morning while reviewing my quarantine, the spam count ticked over 100,000. This is since July 21st last year meaning I average a little more than 11,000 spams per month or 370 per day. During this time, only 12,000 legitimate emails have been delivered which is just 10% of all email.
Despite the high percentage of spam I receive, I am adamantly against any of the proposed plans to charge for sending email. Spammers wouldn’t spam if people didn’t actually respond to their advertisements. It is their message that is important. Clearly, technology exists that can filter this message from ever reaching my inbox rendering it useless and my checkbook a little fatter.
