This weekend I was at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA with BMWCCA Club Racing. Thunderhill has historically been my most difficult track. It has a number of high-speed corners that require a lot of confidence to attack. My last race weekend there in May I turned a fast lap of 2:15 and change which is more than 5 seconds off the pace. Pretty pathetic.
This time around however, it was a totally different story. I’m much more comfortable in the racecar at speed and I was able to turn a couple of laps in the 2:10s which is competitive in my class. I took a second place and a first place in my class although there was a small turnout.
The highlight of the weekend was the handicap race on Sunday where I chased down #258 Tom Miller on the second to last lap. As we came around the last corner to take the white flag, I turned in too early and went 3 wheels over the exit berm and into the dirt. What makes me happy is that I reacted smoothly, opening up the wheel and driving straight and keeping my foot to the floor. I barely lost any ground on Tom as we powered down the front straight before he spun in turn 1 and I passed him. Tons of fun!
